We helped GitHub design its annual report, State of the Octoverse, which presents insights on software development industry trends. We transformed the data from four million sources into maps, diagrams, and charts to make the information more engaging. In addition, we designed a fully responsive website that served as a hub for users to read, explore, and interact with the report’s data insights.

The platform of choice for more than 100 million developers worldwide
GitHub (acquired by Microsoft in 2018) has become the largest code-hosting platform where developers can download, review, and evaluate each other's work. It is the platform of choice for 100 million developers worldwide and by over 90 percent of Fortune 100 companies.
Massive data sets, the most extensive Octoverse to date
GitHub’s data scientists collected and analyzed information from over 40,000 survey responses and 4 million repositories through Excel files, PowerPoint presentations, and other data sets. With this information, along with GitHub’s initial ideas and a 60-page context document, we strategically designed each chart, map, and diagram. Our goal was to find the balance between presenting accurate insights and maintaining clarity and simplicity to reach both technical and non-technical users. The website is responsive and accessible from any device.
Bringing focus to key content with animations and interactive charts
Animations emphasize important website sections: dynamic hero backgrounds add character to the content. Clickable TOCs and progress bars help users navigate the site. Additionally, the interactive charts empower users to explore and compare data points, ensuring a deeper understanding of the information.
An honest approach to data
Using an incorrect or cluttered graphic can confuse or convey the wrong message. That's why we carefully select the best visualization type to represent the data truthfully. The clean and minimal design ensures that the data speaks clearly, making it easy for users to grasp the real story.
The report made a big impact, drawing attention from media worldwide
The impact of the report extended beyond the website, sparking hundreds of discussions on X and nearly 1000 articles across digital magazines and specialized blogs. Major publications including Developer Tech News, KDnuggets, InfoQ, The New Stack, and The Register featured the report, extending its reach and inspiring meaningful conversations within the software development community.
